Teen Drivers, Oh My

Do you have a newly licensed teen driver or a permitted teen learning to drive?

While some insurance companies don’t require a teen with a driver’s permit to be listed on your policy, others will. The best advice we can offer is to always contact your insurance agent when a change occurs to see what your individual policy requires.

For newly licensed teen that lives in your household, you will be required to have them listed on your auto policy as a driver. If you fail to report your newly licensed teen to your insurance company, they may not cover any claims that could arise, leaving you on the hook for any damages. Other carriers may cover the claim but will back charge you for premiums for the teen driver from the day they were licensed. Either way, you could be looking at a big bill that could be avoided by properly insuring your teen.
